Why did we build it?

SharePoint 2007 doesn’t provide any tagging/taxonomy management capabilities.
As for SharePoint 2010 – it does provide new tagging capabilities, but still has some limitations such as:

• The new taxonomy features exist only in SharePoint server, so SharePoint Foundation users don’t get any taxonomy management capabilities.
• No support for tag-level permissions and approval routing
• No support for tag filtering
• No support for alerts/workflows based on changes made in tags
• Limited capability to tag external web content
• Missing Tag-based navigation tools (such as missing Tag Index web part)
